Rajesh Kumar: 'I Want To Do A Mature Comedy, One That Doesn’t Talk Only About Extramarital Affairs'- EXCLUSIVE
After portraying and being known for his cult comedy character Rosesh from the hugely popular show Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, actor Rajesh Kumar says that he is very specific about the kind of humour he wants to do on screen. The actor says that he would like to play something different, away from the stereotypical characters that are being shown on screen today.

“I want to do some matured comedy…extramarital affairs and all I don’t want to talk about. It should have some class. I am also open to playing something rustic. Not many people have explored the character of a Bihari. They have explored a particular kind of Bihari and stuck to it. Like people in the industry have made all Biharies like Lalu Prasad…but there are other dimensions of characters in Bihar also. These are more in the matured space and have writing and performance which suits the age. I want to do that kind of comedy,” says Rajesh, who is currently seen in the show Excuse Me Maadam. The actor says that he is still related to his character of Rosesh, something which the actor is actually proud of. “People associate me with Rosesh because that character is so prominent in their minds that somehow they land up relating me with him. But over the period of time, people have accepted me in different roles as well. Rosesh is a milestone for me, that is my Bharat Ratna, other characters are my Padamshree, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. That’s the dream for any actor to be known by one character that he does for the rest of his life,” he says. In fact, Rajesh adds that he has never anticipated that Rosesh would become so big. “When we were doing the show, we never thought it would become iconic. Not many people are writing characters like Rosesh now which can become iconic. So, I think it was all hand in hand. Especially the team of Sarabhai, the actors and their characters made what Rosesh is today. Without momma, Indrawadhan, Sahil, Monisha, the character would not have been the same. I think it was also the writing and the actors and their reactions which made Rosesh who he is today. There was a chance that it could have become irritating also but we played along the line and that character became iconic,” he says.

The actor says that a comedy chat show is a good idea as well, but it needs to be with a twist. “There can’t be just a comedy chat show. The show will always have wit and humour. A comedy chat show needs to be on the lines of this Pakistani serial called Loose talk. Two people sitting across the table and doing a chat show; one playing different characters. Something like that would be interesting,” he says.

Rajesh also adds that more comedy reality shows should be explored. “There have been comedy reality shows such as Comedy Circus but there is a lot more that can be explored, in terms of content and writing. As of now, I don’t know how or what kind of a script will justify it, but it’s a good place to explore,” he says.
